David Howell scored 7½/9 in the category 2 First Saturday IM tournament for his first IM norm.
The monthly congress held in Budapest and run by Laszlo Nagy is an excellent opportunity for British players to get vital international practice.
By winning this event David, still aged 12, became the youngest westerner to win an IM event and finished with a Tournament Performance Rating of 2563, the rating of a top Grandmaster.
